Wondering What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos?

About Photography by L Rose

I am a newborn and maternity photographer based in San Diego, CA, voted one of San Diego’s top 10 maternity photographers.

I serve maternity, newborn, and family photography clients in the San Diego, Poway, Rancho Penasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Torrey Pines, Carmel Valley, and Bay Ho areas of California.

Let's come up with a maternity photo session you will remember forever and have portraits to cherish for generations!

I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!!! Okay ladies I know you’ve said this at least once or twice in your life. There are a lot of reasons why you could be standing in front of a closet FULL of clothes and still say I have nothing to wear. Maybe you’ve been pregnant before, you’ve gained weight, you’ve lost weight, you’re spring cleaning and just donated a ton of clothes you didn’t think you wanted, the styles are soooo last season.

Why do I bring this up? Because you are now in another stage of life. You are pregnant and are considering hiring a professional maternity photographer to capture your belly in all its beautiful glory. Great idea! But if you’re here on my blog post then you need some suggestions for picking out an outfit to wear on the day of your photoshoot. Well I’ve made a few suggestions for you, I hope they help.

  1. My first suggestion is that you pick the color of your dress first. Then decide if you will be having your portraits printed and framed on your walls at home. What color dress would look good with your home decor? You can also choose to have your photo printed in color and in black and white. That way if you don’t love your dress color choice later in life, you can always swap it out.

  2. Pick out a few dresses. If one doesn’t get worn you can always keep the tag on and return it. Nex would be to decide if you would like an indoor studio photoshoot or an outdoor photoshoot. Outdoors is beautiful but weather and wardrobe changes can be a little tricky. I prefer indoor studio photo shoots because we have protection from the weather and conveniences like a bathroom to change clothes.

  3. You don’t need to spend a fortune to look beautiful in your dress. The focus is on you and your belly, not necessarily the brand of dress. Some moms prefer to wear nothing but a pretty piece of fabric draped over them instead of a dress. And some maternity photographers already have dresses that you can use for your session. Be sure to ask.

To sum up my suggestions, pick a dress color that you will love in ten years from now. Pick a few. Pick one that is more comfortable than pricey. And relax and have fun. You will not regret doing this for yourself and for your family. If you live in the San Diego area then I hope I will be your maternity photographer of choice! Hope to see you soon!
